Where Do You Begin?

Most importantly, it's never too early to begin preparing and packing for a move.

First you need to have that initial yard sale or charity donation. See "moving sale" below for more information.
Second, pack the things that are not in daily use; pictures, out of season clothing, once a year use appliances, decorative items, and books.
When packing always mark clearly on each box what you've placed inside and indicate which room the items came on the box.
Organizing your packing will also make the actual moving process much faster. You won't have boxes spread all over the house.
Do not underpack boxes, which will cause them to be crushed. Conversely, overpacking them can cause them to damage your belongings.
Keep valuables such as legal documents, stock certificates, money, checkbook and credit cards with you.
Remember your curtains and drapes, unless you have agreed to leave window coverings in the house.
It may be more trouble to move canned and bottled foods than it is to replace them.
Boxes from the grocery store will be of much lesser quality than boxes from a moving company.
So what's left? Now you are down to the items you use daily. Keep bins in the garage for charity or another yard sale, and a trash bin.
When your move date is within a week you will want to designate a large room in which to stack boxes and the items you have ready to move.

Before renting ask yourself:

Don't make the common mistake of not asking yourself the right questions before moving in to an appartment or house.

Are there fire alarms? Hall sprinklers? Fire exits?
Are smoke alarms working? (Test them)
Are doors equipped with dead-bolt locks?
Does the door have a viewer? Do windows lock?
Are mailboxes secure? (Look for tampering)
Are parking facilities adequate and well lit?
Can you hear your neighbors or outside noise?
Can drains & furnace be heard through the apt.?
Is the floor squeaky? Can you hear the elevators?
Is the temperature even? Are there drafts?
Are there radiators or central air ducts, 1 per Rm.
Are there exhaust fans in kitchen and bathrooms?
Direction of apartment, concerning heat and light?
Are windows and natural light ample?
Are closets and cabinets adequate?
Do all outlets work? (Use night light to check)
Are there enough outlets in each room?
Do sockets work? (Use a light bulb to check)
Is water pressure OK? (turn on taps to see)
Does water get hot within a reasonable time?
Is the water run rusty? Is there air in the pipes?
Do sinks drain quickly? Do toilets flush properly?
Are there water stains or bubbly paint?
Signs of roaches or mice, behind fixtures?

Have change, calculator, tape, markers, etc.
Get a receipt so you can deduct it on your taxes.

Saturdays are the best days for garage sales.
