One Month Before Move Day

Make a list of all items you´re bringing with you.
Find out the value of belongings you wish to insure and contact your mover about insurance.
Identify and get rid of things you´re not bringing with you. Consider having a garage sale.
Donate unwanted items you can't sell to charitable organizations.
Fill out a Post Office change of address form.
Notify friends, family, businesses, and service provider about your move.
For out of state moves, find out about auto licensing and local regulations.
Update the address on your driver´s license.
Make hotel, car rental, and airline reservations.

Two Weeks Before Move Day

Order moving and packing materials, and begin packing. It's never to early to start packing.
Label boxes with name, contents, and room location. Indicate if they have fragile items.
Arrange to disconnect gas, electric, and other utilities. Let the professionals handle it to be safe.
And have them connected the same utilities at your new place
Transfer Cable, ISP and Telephone services
Make reservations for elevator(s), loading dock, and/or parking space(s) at both locations
Arrange to have major appliances prepped, and large items (e.g. swings and pool tables) disassembled
Collect items you´ve loaned out, and return library books and yard tools you've borrowed from friends

Seven Days Before Move Day

Re-confirm move date and time with our office staff, (703) 838-7645
Provide us with any new phone numbers or special moving plans
Complete inventory list and insurance form.
Dispose of all flammables and household chemicals. Ask your local EPA where?
Arrange for removal and packing of "installed items" like lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, or shelving units.
Figure out what to bring with you in the car or plane and set them aside in a closet.
Pack a suitcase with the clothes and toiletries, and a box of essentials for the first few days.
Make sure to mark the essentials box "Do Not Move" and again set them aside.
The Day Before Move Day

Confirm telephones are working at both locations inorder to stay in touch with your movers
Clear walkways and driveway in bad weather conditions. It will save time and avoid injury.
Clean your stove, defrost and clean your refrigerator. Allow for at least 24 hours to air dry.
Drain your water bed, and remove gas and oil from lawn mowers, snow blowers, and other motor devices
Take down curtains and curtain rods
Remove and pack fragile items in drawers
Place fragile boxes and items in one area
Also isolate or group and clearly mark items not to be moved
Pack your personal belongings except your alarm clock and daily medications.
Empty refrigerators and freezers and keep doors open. A box of baking soda will help with odors

Move Day

Make sure everything is ready for the move
Collect all keys, and put them in a safe place
Strip the beds, but leave them for us to dismantle
Make sure you´re at home when the movers arrive
Assist crew chief in inventoring your items
Keep your bill of lading and inventory list accessible for review if needed.
Make sure the driver has the correct delivery address and phone number
Confirm the expected delivery time with the driver
Before you leave, do a final walk through of every room. Check all closets and cabinets
